Lorde used her Met Gala appearance to tease her new album and elaborate where she’s at “gender-wise”.
In a red carpet interview with Emma Chamberlain, the Kiwi-born singer hinted her whole look was more than just a fashion moment.
“It’s something of an easter egg,” she said. “All will be revealed. I just love the open back.”
To me, it represents where I’m at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman, you know?
Sticking to the 'Tailored for You' dress code under the ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ theme, Lorde wore a silvery-grey micro top with a matching skirt and jacket - all custom made by designer Thom Browne.
The appearance follows last week’s announcement of her upcoming album 'Virgin', and its x-ray cover art.
On Insta, Lorde shared a bit more about about her new era. “I was trying to see myself, all the way through. I was trying to make a document that reflected my femininity: raw, primal, innocent, elegant, openhearted, spiritual, masc."
Talking about her new track 'What Was That', Lorde told Out that the song came out of a pretty "turbulent" time in her life, following the end of her relationship, but added it was the start of feeling her "gender broaden".
"Becoming single, but also really facing my body stuff head-on, [I started] to feel my gender broadening a little bit. Just being back in my house and feeling this big wave of grief."
I just kept thinking, 'What was all of that?' whether it was my seven-year relationship, or a pandemic, or sacrificing my body to my career since I was 16 or 17.
It’s not the first time she’s spoken about gender. In a 2022 email to fans, she reflected on her changing relationship with identity and beauty after seeing an exhibition of nude female portraits by Walter Sickert.
“Growing out my unibrow as an entry point for playing with conventions of beauty/gender/form,” she wrote.
“The shock my brain got seeing these not particularly idealised versions of the female form shocked ME… I realised, like, fuck if I’m not careful I’m just gonna end up striving for conventional (albeit alternative/chic) hotness until I die. And wouldn’t that be… kind of a waste?”
As for how her Met Gala look was an easter egg for her new album, she’s left us guessing… What do you reckon?
